During a journey like this one, very often a Mentor is necessary to help us understand the path. Jesus said the Holy Spirit “will lead us into all truth.” The Spirit of God is our primary mentor, showing us what is truth and what is error. When it comes to hearing the ‘voice’ of God, or His Word, the Holy Spirit is actually more important than the scriptures.
But, when we embark on a new journey as radical as this journey, it is hard to break free from old mindsets and doctrine. The more bible training we have had, or the more years we have been in church, the more prone we are to look at the scriptures through traditional glasses. It is very difficult to read the scriptures with an open mind to receive new revelation.
For this reason, I believe it is very helpful to use other mentors that may not have such a church background, or have traditional Christian viewpoints. I have found some authors who have been used as the ‘word of God’ to me on my journey by explaining truth to me in new terms I can understand, and from different and challenging perspectives. These authors may use different terminology, and they may present concepts contrary to my traditional doctrine; but they rarely contradict the scriptures.
